Juilliard Opera presents the U.S. premiere of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' Kommilitonen!

Three interlocking stories - crossing generations, time-zones and cultures - about students who are involved in political action: the activities of Die Weisse Rose, a group of students at the University of Munich who produced leaflets protesting against the National Socialist government in 1942/3; the lives of two characters, Wu and Zhou, who are involved on opposite sides of China's Cultural Revolution; and James Meredith's lonely battle against segregation and racial prejudice in becoming the first black student to enroll in the University of Mississippi, 'Ole Miss', in 1962.

Paul Chihara, a “classical” composer, is also active in film and television, and directs U.C.L.A.’s new Visual Media Program (film music).

I know I speak for all the composers and the audience, and certainly for myself, when I say that your performances were really spectacular last night. I think one of the nicest compliments came from a musician who was amazed by how comfortable you are in all styles. It was pretty obvious that Chihara's and Kapica's pieces would be a hit, but the ovation for David Fulmer's piece was really proof of what beautiful playing can do for music that otherwise strikes people as inaccessible. Among the audience was the distinguished composer Charles Wuorinen, a very experienced hand at new music performance, with uncompromising standards. He was really impressed, and that does not happen often.
Paul Chihara was really delighted!
So congratulations to all, and my special thanks for a great season.
Best wishes, Joel Sachs

200th Anniversary Birth Frederic F. Chopin

2010

Concierto de Gala 200 Aniversario nacimiento Frédéric Chopin. Cartuja Valldemossa (Mallorca) 1 de marzo de 2010

2010
